1 · Know your budget
Be clear about your budget before you start trying on dresses. Wedding dresses vary widely in price, so a realistic budget helps you narrow your options — and avoids heartbreak if you fall for a dress outside your range.
2 · Dress for comfort, forget the frills
Brides often do their hair, makeup and tan to get the “full look.” But white dresses pick up every mark, and seeing the most raw version of yourself helps you choose a dress that shows off your natural beauty. Leave the frills for the day itself. Wear comfortable beige underwear and a strapless bra so you get a true sense of how the dress fits and feels.
3 · Be open to different styles
Even with a dream dress in mind, try on different styles. Sometimes what you think you want doesn't suit your body or your vision — and you find something unexpected that feels even better. Trust the bridal specialists in the store, the way you'd trust a hairdresser or mechanic. These women know their stuff.
4 · Bring a supportive crew
Bring a few close friends or family, but don't overload the group — too many opinions make the decision harder. Choose people who are supportive, positive, and whose judgement you trust. This can make or break an appointment, so if they don't fill your cup, they shouldn't be invited.
5 · Go for inspiration, not just ready-made dresses
Even if you're leaning towards a bespoke dress, visiting boutiques is valuable. I often advise brides to go and try on dresses to see what's on the table, off the table, and a must. Take the chance to be inspired — and make sure your dream dress isn't already out there.
