Bridal Fitting Tips

Your bridal fitting session is an essential part of your wedding prep. Knowing what to expect can help you feel more confident and less overwhelmed. Here are some valuable tips:

  1. Make an Appointment: Start by scheduling your fitting well in advance. This gives us ample time to make any necessary alterations as well as factor in any larger alterations you might need that require getting extra fabric, lace and beading. As there are only two of us, we can only take on a certain number of dresses, so booking is essential. To book online, please go to my website and contact us.

  2. Choose the Right Undergarments: The undergarments you select can dramatically change how your dress fits. Consider wearing the same style that you plan to wear on your wedding day, as this will allow for better fitting. This includes tape and nipple covers.

  3. Limit What You Bring: While you want to look your best, avoid bringing too many items to the fitting. Bring only the essential accessories like your shoes and any special undergarments. This allows us to focus purely on the fit and alterations needed.

  4. Be Open to Suggestions: We are experts who have worked on many wedding gowns; trust our advice regarding adjustments. We may suggest alterations you hadn't considered that could improve the overall look of your gown.

  5. Trust the Process: Usually, brides have a minimum of two fittings, and some have up to eight. This means that each fitting is a step-by-step process to ensure every part of the gown is perfect. This can mean that sometimes you might come in and pieces aren't sewn down yet, or finished off. This is normal and as long as we are happy, there is nothing to worry about.

  6. Mention the Veil: At this point, it is advised to mention if you would like a Bespoke Veil and try on some of our samples. This makes sure that we can make it in time for your next fittings.

What Happens During Your Fitting?

During your first fitting session, here’s what you can expect:

  • Dress Try-On: We will help you into your gown. Pay close attention to how it feels and fits, particularly around areas such as the bust, waist, and hips.

  • Initial Adjustments: We will discuss necessary alterations. Common adjustments include taking in the sides, bringing in the waist or adjusting the straps. The hem will only be adjusted once all other changes are correct.

  • Visuals: Sometimes it's helpful to visualize changes. We will either pin or mark areas needing adjustment, but this will depend on the fabric and how much we are changing. This allows you to see how the modifications will improve the look; making sure you are happy.

  • Timeline Discussion: Alterations don’t happen overnight. We will explain the timeline for completing adjustments, taking into consideration your wedding date and body changes that happen leading to the date.

  • Follow-Up Visits: Typically, you'll need several fittings. The first fitting is for basic adjustments, while follow-up visits ensure that the dress fits perfectly as changes are made. For the follow-up fittings, you will need shoes. We have a booking system link that will be sent once we have your alterations done, This makes sure that you can book yourself in at a time that suits you between all the other commitments leading up to the wedding.

How much do wedding dress alterations cost?

The cost of alterations can vary widely based on the complexity of adjustments and the type of dress that is being altered. I advise all my brides to set aside between $350 and $550 for most alterations; however, I do quote before any changes are made, so you feel comfortable with the cost.

While the costs may seem daunting, investing in quality alterations is worth it. Your wedding dress is a reflection of your style and, more importantly, a significant part of your wedding day.

Embrace the Fitting Experience

Bridal fittings can feel overwhelming, but they are also an exciting part of the wedding planning process. Here are ways to enjoy the experience:

  • Bring Support: Invite a close friend or family member whose opinion you trust. Their feedback can provide you with confidence and enhance the enjoyment of the fitting. We do however, advise bringing no more than 4 people to your fitting.

  • Stay Relaxed: Allow yourself to enjoy the process. If you are feeling nervous, take a deep breath and remind yourself that this is part of your celebration.

  • Celebrate Progress: Each fitting you attend brings you one step closer to your wedding day. Use this time to revel in the fact that you’re preparing for one of the most significant moments of your life.
